It is so HEARTWARMING the first time a kitten comes up to you for attention. Especially when that kitten was so terrified for the first month after being rescued that she had to be cornered just to try to show her a little affection and to let her know that people are really OK and that life is going to get better and better. Sometimes that moment of acceptance comes in a day or a week and sometimes the foster mom just has to forget about time and learn to recognize the subtlest signs of trust.

Getting to share in the life of a cat like Verdi is an incredible gift! It is very humbling to know that you are caring and loving and willing to give a rescued cat a home (whether a permanent adoptive home or a temporary foster home) and to have that cat rather be anywhere that you are NOT! The majority of cats that go through our foster program are "easy". We get to clean them up and get them ready for adoption. We get to play with them, love them, get to know their likes and dislikes - dogs, other cats, kids, favorite toys, etc. Our goal  -  get them ready and find them a good home. When we get a cat that is terrified of us - honestly - it puts a kink in our plans. Our first thought is often concern that we might have a cat that is "un adoptable". Adopt A Stray does not euthanize. Getting each cat adopted is how we make a space in a foster home to rescue another cat. It might take a day or two or a week to find a connection with a cat that is so afraid of you but, once you do, time stands still and it is no longer important to "get them ready and find them a home". The goal becomes figuring out how to be exactly what that one kitty needs. The goal is to help them learn to trust and to, hopefully, help them WANT to belong. Almost from the start, Verdi would purr IF you could corner her and pet her. (any PURR is encouraging!!) The day I knew she was learning to trust came a month or so later when she came out of hiding, sniffed my hand and then dropped her head to be scratched - all on her own. Just recently, she started playing with other foster kitties and that was when I knew she had started to feel like she belongs.

Verdi has turned out to be such a SWEETHEART!! She is playful and curious and affectionate! She is still a little timid but she is blossoming more every day. When I go into the room where she is, she scoots from her sleeping spot to a hiding spot and immediately turns around and pokes her head out to look at me. It only takes her a matter of seconds before she slowly walks out for some lovin', ear scratching and tummy rubs! Verdi is ready to find her forever home with a family that knows cats and hopefully has another kitty or two. She will need lots of gentle love and patience and time to adjust to another home. She is going to be a wonderful, well-adjusted, loving companion  for years to come.  To watch her blossom and learn to feel safe and at home will be a fantastic feeling for her new family.

By the way, Verdi was born with just one ear. It does not define who she is and is not a handicap. She can hear just fine. It does make her special the same way that odd-coloring or unusual markings do. It is always fun to have something that is a little different than what most people have BUT that is NOT a good reason to adopt a particular animal. Verdi needs a home where the 4-legged members are treated with the same love and respect that the 2-legged members are. She is hoping for a family that loves her just the way she is and that she can give lots of LOVE, PURRS & HEAD BUTTS to in return!!
