Roxie's Story
Roxie's life so far has been split into sections. We are not so sure how it began or how she ended up with Adopt A Stray (AAS) at 4 years old or how she got with her best friend Scooter who was 4 months. But at 4 years old (Roxie) and 4 months old (Scooter) they were adopted. AAS thought it was their forever home as everything seemed to fine after they left.
Their new owner decided that after a year and half he did not bond with them. At this point both were declawed and sent out to live on the balcony. They had a guardian angel in a neighbor who visited them at least twice a day, fed them, cleaned their litter boxes, groomed them and loved them. But his visits were brief and the cats began their life of loneliness and neglect. For the next two and half years Roxie deteriorated on the balcony, her caregiver found AAS because he had the paper work from her adoption. The owner wanted them out OR ELSE we were told. Her caregiver sent pictures of the pair to AAS. The pictures were shocking, they revealed a black and white cat with stains of dark brown on her face, chest and legs. The following day an AAS representative went to visit Roxie with antibiotics and eye medications. Roxie appeared to be suffering, she was shy and unsocialable, the thought of rehoming her was grim. She was in such pain that she was impossible to medicate and needed medical care. The vet visit showed yeast/fungus infection in her ears. Her blood work miraculously showed a healthy cat with some dehydration. However, her mouth evaluation showed loose teeth, swollen and infected gums. Roxie had daily pain that was so severe that the vet felt she needed round the clock morphine.
A few days later she had a full mouth extraction. It turned out she only had 11 teeth left as she lost most of them during the neglect. Less than 24 hours after her surgery there was a miracle. Roxie was a friendly, happy, head butting, purring talking cat. She was out of pain!!! Roxie was back. Her foster mom says she is an amazing cat. She stands on her hind legs and wraps her paws around her neck and does not let go. She talks to her, gives her head butts and gets along great with her other foster cats. Her mouth has healed well after one week and she is eating all kinds of food. This could be a fairy tale, that is if Roxie gets the home she deserves. To think after all this neglect (medical and emotional) all she has to give is love. What an amazing, amazing little girl.
