Carter’s story begins with being found outside and fed by a small community. It was difficult to understand why such an extremely sweet, lovable and gorgeous Maine Coon kitty wasn’t being claimed by his owners. He wasn’t microchipped at the time and Adopt A Stray posted in numerous pet lost and found sites and did its due diligence in locating his home without success.
Carter was vetted and put up for adoption and found what we thought was his forever home quite quickly. After a week the new owner reported aggressive behavior that increased during the first two weeks. Being that AAS didn’t observe this behavior it was felt that the home was not the right fit. Unfortunately, it was not the new home but Carter. His behavior continued and he became aggressive with his foster mom as well. At this point it was realized why he wasn’t claimed by his prior home.
After many months of trials (medications, behavior modifications) and concerns that Carter would not be adoptable we believe that Carter can be put up for adoption to the right home. After finding the correct (inexpensive) medication for Carter, he has not displayed aggressive behavior for months. He takes his one small pill like a treat in a pill pocket once a day.
His foster mom describes him as a confident cat who is affectionate, requires a lot of attention, as in play time and company. Play time is imperative to keep Carter stimulated and happy. He loves to run after balls that are thrown and especially hunt with a pole toy that activates a cats natural instinct to play/hunt. Carter will let you know when he has enough play or stimulation, but not in an aggressive manner.
We believe Carter should be adopted to an experienced cat owner, no young children and no other animals to ensure the optimum permanent home environment for this magnificent cat. Adoption fee: $150 You can meet this wonderful kitty with an appointment.
