A skinny, tired but confident young male kitty was hanging around a Pembroke Pines neighborhood trying to get enough food each day to survive. His bones were sticking out and his long fur was sparce and missing in places from bad nutrition, fleas or a combination of things but despite all of this he purred when you petted him. He somehow ended up in the driveway of an Adopt A Stray volunteer who fed him a good meal. He ate and took a long nap in her driveway. When he was still hanging around the next day, it was time to bring him in and try to find him a permanent home.
Week One
Riker was fully vetted (tested, dewormed, defleaed and vaccinated) He was found to be neutered and probably about 2-3 years old. He should be a large cat as even in his emaciated state he weighed 10 lbs. The first week he basically ate every morsel of food presented (which was a lot) and then slept . The poor kitty was obviously exhausted and never sure if this was going to be the last bowl of food he got for a while. He had no interest in leaving the room where he was staying, playing with toys or even looking out the big window. Although when someone visited him he always got up to greet them and purred loudly when petted.
Week Two
Riker is getting his energy back. He's beginning to play with toy mice, pole feather toys and he plays a mean game of laser tag. He always greets anyone who walks into the room where he is staying. He loves being petted and his fur is rabbit soft. He may sit on your lap for a couple minutes and always shows his appreciation for his care with loud and long purrs.
Week Three
Riker's energy is definitely back and he has joined the other cats in the hosue - sometimes he just runs full speed from one end of the house to the other for no discernible reason. He has a wonderful "let's all get along" attitude and has adjusted to the other cats in the house quite well, He would probably love a little "all star wrestling" match if they were up to it but so far he has respected their wishes and not pushed his luck.
He continues to be a confident cat and never hides from visitors. Usually he rubs against their legs a couple times and then just lays in the middle of the floor and watches what's going on.
He is very food motivated....just open a can of cat food and he is all over you.
Week Four
We're still learning more about Riker. It has become apparent that he is an extremely active cat, he will follow you around the house and tries to get into whatever door, drawer, or box you are working with. So far nothing scares him, not visitors, not vacuum cleaners, not knocks on the door, or other loud noises. In his quiet times, he will want to curl up next to you on the couch.
Week Five +
As it turns out Riker is a kitten in a big cats body. He loves playing and wrestling with the young fosters currently in the home. He would absolutely love to find a home with another cat that wants to run and play and wrestle with him. He seems to know how far to push his attentions and backs off from the cats that don't want to play and is gentle with the kittens. Check out the video of him grooming one of the foster kittens as well as another adult. He's very generous with his attentions.
